In the wake of the upholding of evolution instead of creationism or intelligent design I am a little perplexed. It has caused me to make up a new word: DOCTRINIUNITY. The word is a mixture of Doctrine, Trinity and Unity. They are three things very important to me.
Doctrine is important because it lifts up the authority, integrity and truth of God's Word. As our church has said, "Scripture contains all things necessary for Salvation." There are also all sorts of admonitions in the Bible about obeying God's Word in its fullness at not adding or taking anything away. It says in the Bible that God spoke creation into being. Whether He did it in six days or six million years is not important. But his initiation of creation tells me that I am not an accident...that God planned my life and has a purpose to fulfill through me. Without God acting in creation my life simply doesn't make sense.
The other thing is that survival of the fittest, if followed to its logical conclusion, says that some are not as fit as others. Didn't the Nazi party in Germany believe this. Don't the tribal factions in Rwanda live this out? What are we setting ourselves up for. Isn't the belief that some are better than others come into being when such a doctrine is exploited or misinterpreted? I am all for science...but I am also for God and the belief that all are children of God and are purposed by their creator.
Trinity is in my Word because it reminds me that God is in everything. Not only has God created and called His people, but sent His Son when we could not obey His call and covenant. So I have a meaningful past, present and future because God is one. God is in every promise, gift and inspiration I will ever receive. He continues speaking, saving and inspiring in all I do.
Unity is also in my new word because I think there needs to be unity in our church. We are all members of the Body Of Christ and thus have a purpose in the fellowship. Some are called to preach, teach, care and listen. Others are called to defend, discern and even dissent when sin enters the body. But How do I reconcile a biblical worldview, The saving work of the Trinity and the call for the church to be one? I am at a loss!
I want all these things to be alive in our fellowship, but what do we do when doctrine and unity become mutually exclusive? What do we do when part of the church says that the supernatural power of God is not operative in creation? What do we do when we are fractured and separated by core beliefs?
A pastor I talk to said that when his church heard of the resolution on evolution, several members said they would no longer support the church financially. Another pastor hopes his congregation won't even find out about the resolution because he has no idea how to explain it. When we become afraid that resolutions of the church will only do damage to the fellowship...what do we do?
I want my word to be real...but I fear that in some ways it is oxymoronic...I think that's a new word too...How do we achieve doctriniunity? Somebody help me!
